The Role Of Ayurveda In Boosting Women Reproductive Health

Cathy and Michael started planning their family years before they got married. Two children are what they wanted. Eight years after their marriage, their dreams are yet to see the light of the day. The couple have tried every possible fertility treatment available but to no avail. A simple desire on their part has become an impossible quest. Adoption is on their agenda now, but in the heart of heart they still wish it had happened naturally.

Women’s fertility ratio is on the decline. The average sperm count has also decreased by 48 per cent since 1940. While increased pesticides and chemical fertilizers could be a cause, the high levels of stress in modern day life also has a role to play in affecting reproduction.

Maharishi Ayurveda is the ray of light and hope for many of these childless couples. “The ayurvedic ideal goes far beyond merely conceiving. Instead the emphasis is on creating a child who is mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually healthy – a wise and well-rounded child who will contribute to society and become an enlightened citizen.”

According to Maharishi Ayurveda, conception takes place due to three things – a healthy ovum, a healthy uterus and a healthy sperm. Healthy Shukra dhatu (the reproductive tissue) governs good reproductive health. And Diet and Ayurvedic home remedies have a major role to play if you wish to conceive without any trouble.

Foods That Nourish The Seven ‘Dhatus'

There are plenty of them such as:

- Fresh fruits and vegetables

- Moong Dal

- Urad Dal cooked with equal parts of turmeric, cumin, fennel and coriander

- Whole grains

- Dairy proteins including milk, paneer and lassi

- Dried fruits such as figs, raisins and dates

- Soaked almonds or walnuts (grind them and add them to your vegetables)

- Breakfast containing stewed apple

- Sweet and Juicy fruits such as mangoes, peaches, pears and plums

Foods That Enhance The Reproductive Tissue

Following are the items:

- Milk

- Broccoli

- Asparagus

- Rice pudding

- Spices such as cumin (which purifies the uterus in women and the genitourinary tract in men), ajwain powder, turmeric and black cumin

- Mango milkshake

- Date milkshake

Eating a wide variety of foods helps in getting the right and essential nutrients needed to enhance fertility.

How To Increase Fertility Later In Life

What about the couples who want to conceive after the age of 40? Tall task, is it? Any special tips? Well, the Council of Maharishi Ayurveda Physicians advises such couples to concentrate more on their diet and routine.

Say no to Stress. Go to sleep on time and make sure to get a morning massage. Protein needs of your body should be looked into – intake of paneer ( cottage cheese), milk and lassi ( non sweet diluted yogurt) has its contribution in the dietary musts.

Women should take care of their themselves during menstruation days. The Ayurveda suggests the following tips – avoid skipping meals, avoid travelling, take foods that are light, warm and easy to digest, avoid aromas or food items that are highly chemicalized, take ample rest during menstrual cycle.
